Spring has sprung in the Ozarks, and not a moment too soon for me! I’m just not into cold weather at all, and all those around me are glad for the warmer weather as well. Probably because they don’t have to listen to my incessant complaining about the icy tentacles of death that are constantly trying to bring civilization as we know it to a horrible end, and destroy my perfect 75 to 85 degree comfort zone. Anyway…….I don’t like cold!!! And I want things to be green…not brownish grey!!! ASIDE FROM THAT…. Things are really getting exciting here at SLC! The gears of the new full line catalog are grinding forward at a happy pace, and we’re all looking forward to its release soon. Of course, there will be lots of new leathers, tools, probably a few below average dog jokes, and whatever else we see as being necessary to help you to be successful. On a serious note, We’ve got the best team here that we’ve ever had, and we’re all in agreement that the best way for SLC to continue to be successful is to make you successful. With that thought in mind, we’ve managed to significantly lower our costs and your prices on a great many of the most popular leathers being used. We’ve expanded our services as well. MY LEATHER JOURNEY DENNY LOWE

M y life in leather craft started from the inspiration of my Uncle Richard Stanton, from Mt. Vernon, MO. He was a leather craftsman by trade. I was 10 or 11 years old when this trip all began. Whenever I had any money and could con my father into taking me to the local Tandy store, on Sheridan Avenue in Denver. Leather crafting, hunting, fishing, and “Cowboying” were my main interests through school age to adulthood. Carpentry was my vocation until the late 1970’s, when I went to work for an oilfield service company that was in Colorado. This ended up taking me to Grand Junction, CO with them until the early 1980’s when the bottom fell out of the oil business, and I was laid off. Looking for a way to make a living to support a wife, son, horses, and a mortgage payment, I searched out a local saddle shop. With nothing to lose, I went to the only saddle shop in town, Diamond Stock Saddle Co. Bob McCray was the owner/operator and he had developed his skills at the Visilia Stock Saddle Company. With more than just a little skepticism, he put me to work. Bob became my mentor as he led me through all the professional phases of saddle repair. For quite some time I was in the saddle repair area for all the saddles that came through the shop, but one day he let me start building a couple of saddles using his patterns and STRICT supervision. I continued working and learning for Bob until one day he told me he was going to hang it up. Timing seems to have a way of aligning; you see my grandfather

had passed shortly before this announcement and he had left me a little money. I approached Bob and told him I would like to buy his business. I didn’t have enough money to buy him out, but he sold me the inventory that I could afford and consigned the rest to me. Bob rented a building for me on North Avenue in Grand Junction, and I went into business as Diamond Saddle Company. I worked hard during the poor economy, due to the downturn of the oil business, coupled with my complete lack of knowledge of management skills, it was not long before I was operating in the red. My dad still had the family farm in Ash Grove, Missouri and we moved everything back to Missouri lock stock and barrel. Not wanting to give up my business, I put my shop in a local feed and western store called PFI. It was about thirty miles from the farm, but it was a hurdle I wanted to clear. Soon after I started at PFI, the tack store manager talked me into entering a couple saddles I had built in the 1987 Federation of Leather Guilds Show (held in Springfield for that year). That year Robert Beard won the Al Stohlman Award and that was presented at that leather show. By some stroke of luck both of my entries won 1st place in their respective categories. This was the one and only show that I have entered my work into, but I have always cherished the fact that I participated in an international show with so many prominent individuals in attendance.

a vacation to the Sheridan, Wyoming area and took a couple of my finished saddles with me to show to Don Butler at his custom cowboy shop. We visited for some time, and I inquired about employment as a saddle maker in the area. Don told me that he did not have the room for another saddle maker in his shop, but he told me about a very capable saddle maker in Cody, Wyoming that was looking for another hand, Keith Seidel. He called Keith and the next day I was off on adventure to Cody. When I arrived, we talked a bit and then got down to business. I showed him my saddles and that was all it took for him to hire me. We got back on the road to Missouri, gathered up what we had, leased out the farm, and turned back to Cody. About 11 miles out of town, on the south fork of the Shoshoni River we rented a place to live, and I went to work for Keith Seidel at Seidel’s Saddlery. This was a very exclusive shop; we did special projects for anyone that had an idea. The projects would include hat bands, motorcycle gear, gun holsters, pool table light shades, and more. One of the very first projects I got to work on was a Full Floral Stamped Saddle with Bolin Silver Conchos, this saddle turned out to be a gift for then president of Mexico, Vicente Fox. Later, a project of note was a belt for now former president George W. Bush. The list goes on, but the experience that I had there and the knowledge that I gained is beyond comparison.

I kept my shop at PFI through two store moves from 1987-2009. In 2009 we took

After working at Seidel’s Saddlery for some time, my wife grew home sick and longed to be closer to family again. Eventually, I reluctantly agreed, and we decided to move back to the farm in Missouri. This was not an easy time for me and for the most part I had retired from full time saddle making. I did still run a part time shop, Lowe Stock Saddle Co., out of the old milk barn there on the farm, but it was not quite the same. I built a few saddles and did repair work, while also working full time for the Ash Grove School District. Which brings us to about 10 years ago at Springfield Leather Company in Springfield, MO. Talking with the owner, Kevin Hopkins, I asked how things were going and he gave me his world-famous response, “Busier than a gofer in soft dirt.” My reply to him was straight to the point, “You NEED my help.” To which he responded with, “When can you start!” October of 2013, I started at SLC and since that time, that is where I have been. There have been so many firsts in my career here, that I can’t begin to name them all. I began on the retail floor answering customers’ questions and doing leather tooling demonstrations. Kevin started having me join him in some video demonstrations, that he would put out on DVDs. Then that turned into me being in videos by myself for Liz, who was the retail manager, every week. She called them Doodles with Denny. Eventually I moved off of the retail floor and into the R&D Department with the head of R&D Clayton Bowman. Liz had also taken up a spot in R&D and now my Doodles with Denny were turned into tooling pattern packs that customers could purchase. This

consisted of various projects and products that still are sold on the shelves today., but I still had the urge to build saddles. I asked about having a saddle making class and I was met with a resounding YES! The only two drawbacks I could see at this time was it was going to have to take place on Saturdays, so the participants could travel in for the 13 eight-hour sessions, and it was going to happen in place of the leather tooling classes I wanted to teach too. This class was recorded, and the video still lives on YouTube as SLC’s most watched video. The saddle class was a great success and was one of the most fruitful experiences I have had. The saddle classes now are a thing of the past, but I do still teach leather carving classes every week at the store. I believe this has taught me as much as the teaching the students receive. Several area groups and leather guilds have asked for me to come teach leather tooling, and I jump at the chance to share what this leather career has given to me. I have gone to elementary schools with Liz and Jeff from SLC, and taught students how to do simple leather crafting projects and loved it. For the last couple years, I have found myself in a position I would have never dreamed of. Two live videos a week teaching whoever may tune in on three different stream platforms. Tony (SLC Digital Media Coordinator) and Liz talked me into this and I reluctantly said yes to being in front of four cameras at one time. What I thought would be the most nerve-wracking thing I could do, has turned into a HOOT! The viewers get to experience, not only the project education, but since they are live…they get to witness the fact that imperfection is a realty.

Mistakes happen in everyday crafters lives and they happen on live videos, so we get the chance to teach how to overcome your mistakes. In my life as a leather crafter, I have been fortunate enough to work at a job that I truly love and am able to share that passion with others. I’m especially grateful that I’ve gotten to work with so many great craftsmen and I’ve been able to write so many projects off my “Bucket List”. I could not ever dream of having spent my life any other way.

Purchasing and maintaining equipment is an important part of owning a business because unreliable production will definitely limit your ability to fill orders. This is one reason that the equipment you choose be appropriate for the way you intend to use it. A common mistake made by beginners is trying to use an industrial sewing machine designed for the garment industry to sew leather. Industrial sewing machines which are designed primarily for sewing upholstery fabrics may not be suitable for sewing leather. However, they can be modified for sewing light to medium-weight leather. Heavy or extra heavy leather must be sewn with a sewing machine specifically designed for sewing leather. Generally speaking, if you are only going to be making products such as belts, wallets and book covers, etc., then an industrial flatbed sewing machine might be all you need. However, a heavy-duty cylinder-arm machine, instead of a flatbed, is best for sewing the widest variety of leather products due to its versatility. A cylinder-arm (also known as free-arm) sewing machine is indispensable for sewing items with unusual shapes, such as saddles, handbags or jacket sleeves. (Carisoprodol) Machines with an oscillating hook are preferred because this design makes it possible to use a wider range of thread sizes. You can sew anything from lightweight leather to extra heavy leather products. What should you consider when choosing the best machines for sewing leather products? Get a machine that is designed for your purpose: First and foremost, be sure to talk to a sewing machine dealer that specializes in industrial leather sewing machines. When choosing a machine for sewing leather it is important that you get one that is designed for leather. In other words, be sure that the sewing machine you are thinking of buying will be able to do the job. There is nothing worse than buying a sewing machine and then discovering that it is designed for the boot-making industry when you want to make wallets. The machine you choose should accommodate a variety of thread sizes: Your decision should take into account the different thread sizes, needle point styles and types of feed mechanisms available on heavy-duty industrial leather sewing machines. The thread sizes range from #69 (for lightweight material) to #346. Size #415 is available but very rarely used. Since leather is not a woven fabric, the proper configuration for sewing leather will include a needle with a special point that pierces or cuts the material rather than a ball-point needle which goes between the weave. The two most common feeding

mechanisms are walking foot and needle-feed walking foot (also called compound feed or triple feed). Either style can be used for upholstery fabrics. Many sewing machines used in the boot industry use roller feet. The right drive unit will enable you to sew the heaviest of leather: The sewing machine’s

drive unit must be specially designed for sewing leather. The drive unit should include a digital variable-speed DC servo motor and a ball-bearing style speed reducer. The speed reducer serves two functions: first, to slow the sewing machine to a comfortable, easily maneuverable speed and second, to increase the torque for maximum piercing power through the heaviest leather at slow speeds. A concerned supplier will be able to help guide you through a smart purchase.
