After 5 years in Fargo, I told the company that I wanted to take over the Springfield Missouri store that had come open. They wanted me to go to Tulsa Oklahoma…. I flatly refused. Finally they gave in, and sent me to Springfield in 1983. I arrived to find very bad circumstances. But again, to keep the story short, I did my best for the company, and by being able to do leatherwork at home, I was getting by. But that was about it. By this time I had a wife and two kids, so life was a bit expensive. After a period of time, I developed some large accounts in Branson, and would drive down there once a week and check on them. I discovered that there was a large demand for finished leather goods for the tourist industry there. Tandy didn’t have finished goods to sell, so I started thinking about what I might be able to do. One day, I went to visit a shoe factory in my area, to see if any miscellaneous or odd lot leathers were available. I did this on a regular basis, so management got to know me well. When I got there, they were loading all sorts of equipment into the back of a truck. They were closing the factory. One of the head guys asked me if I’d like to buy any equipment, like a splitter, or sewing machines. I didn’t have any money, but I told him that I would, and he helped me to select a Fortuna splitter, a glue machine, a post sewing machine, a bell knife skiver, and a couple of minor items. I told him he’d have to hold them until the next day, and I went home, borrowed money on a credit card, borrowed a truck, and picked up everything the next day. I took it all home, put it in my garage. I really had no clue as to how to use any of it. Plus I had to have 3 phase electricity! (continued page 106)
