Kits, Kit Components & Starter Sets 20 th Anniversary Edition After letting the reality of things sink in for a week or so, I decided to talk to Tandy and ask if there was any chance that I could buy the store that I had been managing. I was told that it was possible. We worked out the details (very scary), and I went to the bank, and proceeded to tell them that they needed to lend me a bunch of money, be- cause this was a deal that was too good to refuse. I took a second mortgage on my house, sent Tandy a certified check, and Springfield leather was born in March of 99. I had my wife, 2 daughters, and 2 employees. I ran the business from a checkbook that I kept in my back pocket. After 9 months we had done as much business as my Tandy store had done in a year, and we had 2 more employ- ees. We talked with the landlord, and reached and agreement to buy rather than rent. After another year he sold us the building next to us. I thought I was in hog heaven, and would never need any more space. What a joke! But it did give us the room to start bringing equipment out of our garage and into our store. Slowly but surely, my garage migrated to SLC, and our production shop came into being. At first it was just me in the shop, and then only when I could be there. Then we hired one guy, and I trained him. After a while it was two guys. Then we had to expand the space, and we added a clicker and more cutting dies. Then it became 3 guys and we started to produce more volume orders of cut parts and finished goods. As the years passed, we bought more and more properties in our strip center. We added more employees to our shop and our retail and mail order operation. We got to the point where we had 7 full time people in our shop, and 20 other people for the rest of the operation. To cut out the years in between, we now have about 80 employees, 20 of which are in either our production shop, or research and development. The rest are spread out over various de- partments that consist of Mail order, shipping, E-commerce, (Ebay, Amazon, Etsy, SLC website) Customer service, retail, marketing, advertising, packaging, purchasing and receiving, and various office positions.
