The following are the tips, tricks, and educated opinions of Kevin (SLC Owner) and Rusty (SLC President.) Although we live by theses tips and tricks, this booklet is merely a guide we use here at SLC. There is no "Do It All" Machine and just because one machine is more expensive doesn't mean it’s any better than a less expensive one. Buy your machine based on your needs. If you have the opportunity to purchase a machine that does more than you need at the moment, then go for it! You'll never regret buying a machine with a longer arm than you need, but you might regret purchasing a machine with a shorter arm if your needs change in the future. Don't trip over dollars just to pick up dimes. Buy your machine from someone that understands sewingmachines, has used themextensively, and that you feel good about. This is one of themost important statements in this information booklet. Return Policy for Machines SLC wants you to be successful and have a great experience with whatever machine you purchase. It isn’t our goal to sell you the most expensive machine we can but to sell you the RIGHT machine, the first time. Moving leather machinery across the country is not a

simple task and getting a machine back that didn’t end up being the right fit for a customer creates grief for everyone involved. To that end, if you find yourself in a situation where you’ve ordered a machine that is not fitting your needs, please contact us and we will work with you as far as humanly and reasonably possible to resolve the situation. If you’re willing to work with us, you’ll find us willing to work with you. Freight & Shipping Machines are shipped by truck on a pallet or available for pickup at SLC. For most machines, (with the exception of the 10-ton clicker press, and the AK-20 strap cutter) freight charges will run from $250.00 up to about $350.00 to a BUSINESS ADDRESS OR SHIPPING HUB. Some machines are less costly to ship, such as the Cobra burnisher. Of course, there are destinations that can cause an exception. If you live at 405 Elm street in a small subdivision, it would be best to discuss delivery options before you order. PROS AND CONS OF EACH NEW AND USED

MACHINE MECHANIC AVOIDANCE

it. So, if Uncle Charlie’s used machine doesn’t have a servo motor and a speed reducer, you’ll want to make sure that you’re fast at getting your fingers out of the way! Most USED industrial machines come with a CLUTCH MOTOR, rather than a servo motor. Thus, mostly they have a reputation of running like a scared rabbit, from 0-90 mph, in about 1 second.

You need to ask yourself this important question: Have I always dreamed of becoming a sewing machine mechanic? (Answer honestly). If you hesitated or answered “no” to this question, a NEW machine is the only way to go! If you decide that you need to save a few hundred bucks because good ol’ Uncle Charlie has a machine in the barn that “was sewin’ when I put it in thar’...” you are without fail going to be required to become a sewing machine mechanic...or the proud owner of a boat anchor! Another factor to consider when purchasing a sewing machine is whether or not it has a SERVOMOTOR and a SPEED REDUCER. A servomotor works a lot like a gas pedal in a car...the harder you push, the faster it will go! And happily, the lighter you push, the slower it will go! Most of the newer machines today even have speed settings that will allow them to go only as fast as you’re comfortable with. Couple that with a speed reducer, which not only reduces the speed, (hence the name), but more importantly it increases torque. This keeps you sewing through heavy material even at slow speeds. Without the reducer, there’s not enough torque to carry the needle thru several layers of leather without you helping

A compoundwalking foot, or a geared roller foot, are worth their weight in Oreos, and that’s a fact! A compound walking foot does just that. Instead of just holding pressure on the top material it actually walks across the material, which prevents bunching, and will climb up easily over different thicknesses of material. A geared roller foot draws the material through with a wheel on top and a wheel on the bottom, which makes a very nice consistent stitch. It also has an easier time of going over a seam than a non-gear driven roller foot.

A POST MACHINE is great for bags, upholstery, belts, garments, sewing patches on jackets, decorative stitching, as well as stitching in hard to reach places.

A HEAVY CYLINDER ARM MACHINE is a whole different animal. These work great for belts, holsters, sheaths, saddle and tack, tarps, and usually just anything that is very thick.

A FLATBED MACHINE works well for chaps & chinks, wallets, some bags, upholstery, belts, tarps, and does a nice job on basic around the house sewing.

To ensure quality of the machine SLC sews on each one before we ship them out. Our dedicated sewing machine craftsmen inspect each machine after arriving and before leaving our store. The Cobra Class 4 is a 16-1/2˝ cylinder arm Heavy Stitcher, making it great for projects requiring a lot of throat space. This machine has a triple feed mechanism and comes standard with a heavy pedestal stand on casters, along with a Servo Motor and Speed Reducer. An EPS Package option is available as well (see pg. 37 for more on the EPS). This machine will sew thicknesses from 3/32˝ up to 7/8˝ leather, including several layers of saddle skirting! The Cobra Class 7 machine is designed for folks that need to sew super heavy stuff all the time; heavier than what the Class 3 or 4 will sew. It’s modeled after a very old machine that used to be used by the military (especially the Navy) back in the day when sail repair was a thing...But if you happen to need to sew four layers of 16 to 18 oz. It’s a great machine and uses a compound needle feed that will sew up to about 3/8˝ with thread up to and including 207. But 207 is the very top of the range. The Class 18 is good for fabrics, tarps, all sorts of upholstery work, lighter belts, straps, wallets, chaps, and small flat goods. A positive feature is that it has a protective safety (throw-out) clutch to prevent you from knocking the machine out of time. It’s easily put back in place when needed, and the machine is quite user friendly.

The Cobra Class 17 is a walking foot flatbed machine that is very similar to the Class 18, except that it is a lighter duty machine. It will sew up to 5/16˝ but if that’s what you’re going to be sewing most of the time, it would be better for you to buy a heavier machine. It’s great for upholstery, fabrics, lighter belts and straps and small flat goods like minimalist wallets and such. Will handle thread sizes up to 138. Going over heavy seams could be a bit of an issue if you’re not careful.

The Cobra Class 8810 Post Machine is a table mount machine with a 7˝ tall post, and has a bit of a tilt toward the user. This is NOT a heavy weight machine. It has top and bottom gear driven roller feet with a needle feed. NO REVERSE. This is a very specialized machine, so talk to a professional about whether this machine will meet your needs. It will accommodate thread sizes from 46 up to 207. Going over heavy seams with a post machine can be an issue sometimes. COBRA CLASS 29-18

The Cobra Class 29-18 Patch Machine is a good copy of a machine that has been around almost since the dawn of sewing machines. Every shoe repair shop had one because they needed to sew a patch on the inside of a boot or shoe or sew a patch on a jacket. The machine had a 360° rotatable walking foot that would allow you to easily stitch in any direction at all. And you could hand crank them so that you could sew slowly. With the improved Cobra patching machine, you can still sew in any direction, and you can crank it by hand either from the end of the machine or the front, which is nice. And it’s just wonderful for sewing a patch way down inside a boot, or for sewing a patch on a jacket or hat. It is not a heavy leather sewing machine, but neither is that old Singer one that good ol' Uncle Ralph has in his shed! The 18˝ narrow arm only allows for a very, very small bobbin, so sewing long lines is not happy. It will use 46-138 thread, but 69 is ideal. Will sew about 3/16˝ in thickness.

Both the NP-4 and NP-10 have adjustable speed motors that are controlled the same way a sewing machine is controlled, are powered by a digital D.C. servo motor with adjustable speeds, and both feature a built-in knife sharpener and heavy-duty guide.
